How To Set Up The Raspberry Pi 5
Watch the video above for an absolute basics guide on how to set up the Raspberry Pi 5.
This video is for you if you’re an absolute beginner, a hobbyist with some experience, an educator, or even if you just need a refresher if it’s been a while since you set up a Raspberry Pi.
What to buy:
- The Raspberry Pi 5 board, you can get it in 2, 4, 8, or 16 Gigabytes
- A microSD card that’s 32GB or more and Class 10 or better
- A microSD card reader or an SD card reader with an adapter
- USB-C power supply that is 5 Volt 5 Amp like the official Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C Power Supply
- HDMI compatible Monitor or TV
- USB Keyboard and mouse (I love the Raspberry Pi version!)
- Micro HDMI to HDMI cable to connect the monitor to the Pi
- Internet connection using Wi-Fi or Ethernet will work too
- Raspberry Pi Case with active cooling
- (Optional) The Raspberry Pi Active Cooler
What to expect from the setup process:
Raspberry Pi comes as a blank computer with no operating system, so we’ll use our PC to download the latest operating system to our SD card. Then, we’ll configure the settings including the hostname, username and password, we’ll set up wifi, and then move our SD card to the Pi to continue there.
Next, watch the video to guide you through installing the case and active cooler, plugging in the keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and getting booted up for the first time!
Now you're off and running with a fully functional Raspberry Pi 5.
